Namakan River / High Falls
High Falls Generating Station will be a run-of-river hydroelectric generating station at High Falls on the Namakan River, south of Atikokan, approximately 250 km west of Thunder Bay. The Lac La Croix First Nation is and will be involved with all aspects of project development from the initial environmental and social studies, preliminary and final design through to construction and the eventual operation of the station.
The project design incorporates a weir across the top of High Falls to help direct river flow into the power canal which is imbedded in the left bank of the river. Annual power production is expected to be approximately 34,000 MWh providing sufficient electricity for approximately 4,000 homes. A sluice structure will be incorporated beside the powerhouse to provide additional discharge capacity for flood conditions.
